UPDATE ON VISA TRIP

MARCH 21, 2010

Dear family, friends, and ministry partners,
We are only a week away from leaving Russia to renew our visas. We thought we might have free housing in Prague through the Christian school there, but it did not work out. Our friends in Czech Republic have made us a reservation with friends of theirs that run a guest house right in Prague. These accommodations will be about $60/night which is very good, but still $60/night. Our friends in Prague already had house guests coming for then and they also live about an hour and a half outside Prague which would make it complicated to complete our visa and stay with them. We are still hoping we will have an opportunity for a visit. Please continue to pray for the Lord’s provision for our trip. It is going to cost us about $2000 that is not in our budget. Pray that He would stretch the resources we have. Pray that all the details would fall into place.
Another concern is for Lois. This past week we spent a few nights at some friends’ apartment watching their daughter while they were in St. Petersburg. She got up during the night and tripped over the dog. She landed square on her tailbone. It hurts to walk or sit and she is in a lot of pain. We have a lot to do to get ready to leave. Our day to day activities involve a lot of walking and when we land in Prague we will have a 12 hour over night wait to deal with. Pray for the Lord’s healing and that she could be functional while we are in Prague. It would be terrible to be there for the first time ever and not be able to do or enjoy anything because of immobility and pain from an injury.
Lastly, please pray for strength and endurance. Our days are so much more full than they have ever been before and it takes its toll on us. This week we are dog sitting at another friends’ apartment while they are out of the country renewing visas. So on top of school and preparing for our upcoming trip, we are not in our own place and traveling further to and from school.
Thank you for your prayers and your participation in the work that the Lord is doing in Moscow. It means a great deal to us. Please share this with your church families and lift us up in prayer this morning during worship.
Yours in Christ,
Tom & Lois

PRAYER REQUEST- UPDATE ON VISA

MARCH 7, 2010
Dear family, friends, and ministry partners,
We’re sorry to have kept you in the dark for so long. We temporarily lost our internet service and were disconnected for the past few days. We didn’t get service restored until very late last night(Saturday). The school had its meeting with officials this past Wednesday about the visa issue and nothing has been immediately resolved. We found out yesterday afternoon that there has been no decision from the government, but it looks like an extension on visa quotas will not be issued. Therefore we are going ahead with plans to leave Russia during spring break (March 26-April 3) to renew our visas. Based on the information we have so far we will be going to either Madrid or possibly to Prague. Both of these would be cheaper than returning to the states because of the large difference in airfare. We have fellow mission associates near Prague. That might be the cheapest way to go but we need to confirm whether or not the Russian Consulate there will issue visas to people holding US passports. Either way we are looking at an un-budgeted expense of at least $1000 – possibly as much as $2000, depending on where we go.
Pray for God’s provision for this trip. We know that He is in control of all things and this is no surprise to Him.

Pray that He will stretch our resources.
Pray that He will guide us as we work out all the details.
Pray for peace if we have to go to Madrid on our own and navigate another foreign city.

Please share this request with your churches this morning, and put it on your prayer chains. We covet your prayers but we are confident that our Lord will provide and sustain us. We pray God’s blessings on you for this Lord’s day. We have beautiful bright sunshine here in Moscow this morning as we start ours.
Blessings,
Tom & Lois

PRAYER REQUEST – VISA NEEDS

MARCH 2, 2010

Dear family, friends, and ministry partners,
We want to thank you for your prayers this past month. They have definitely been felt. This first month has gone surprisingly well and the Lord has blessed us in so many ways, some of which we have already shared. He continues to provide for us at every turn even as He promised that He would. We are writing to ask that you continue to pray for us and for the school concerning the visa issue we mentioned in an earlier email.

It’s complicated, but we will explain it to you as best we can, being new to this we are not completely understanding of it ourselves. At the end of December, the school was informed that a new interpretation of an existing Russian law put Hinkson under a fixed quota for teacher visas. That quota was set at a lower number from the previous school year. Prior to this, they had been able to issue visas for as many teachers as they needed. To increase their visa quota for 2010 they needed to have applied by September or October of 2009. This was 2-3 months BEFORE the government informed them in late December. This ruling affects every educational institution in Russia that has non-Russian teachers on its staff. This new interpretation meant that many teachers who came last year with Hinkson visas could now not renew their one year visas when they expired. The school was informed of this AFTER they issued our Letter of Invitation and while our work visa was being processed. We arrived on a 3 month work visa from the school that was to be converted to a one year upon our arrival. That may not be possible right now.

Jeff, our director, said that whenever there is a new ruling or new interpretation, schools and businesses everywhere are left scrambling during the interim. Eventually it gets sorted out. Several teachers left school during February to make “visa trips” to renew their visas. The school has petitioned for a one time exemption to convert all the visas it currently has in light of the fact that the ruling was handed down too late to apply for a quota increase. They will be meeting with officials, tomorrow, Wednesday, March 3rd.

PLEASE PRAY THAT OUR EXEMPTION WOULD BE GRANTED ON MARCH 3RD so that OUR visas and others could be converted for remainder of the school year. PLEASE PRAY THAT THE LORD WOULD GRANT THE SCHOOL FAVOR IN THE EYES OF THE OFFICIALS.

If an exemption is not granted this week, we will have to make plans to leave during spring break (March 26 – April 4) and go to Madrid to renew our visas before they expire on March 31. The Russian Consulate in Spain will issue visas for non-Spaniards. This is the only country where the Consulate will do that and it is cheaper than flying back to the states. If we have to go this route it will cost us about $1500-2000 that is not accounted for in our budget. Teachers at Hinkson raise their own support so many are in the same boat as we are.

WE KNOW THAT THE LORD IS IN CONTROL OF THIS SITUATION. However, He asks that we bring all things to Him in prayer. The school and every teacher and student here has seen the Lord work in wonderful ways to provide for His own and He will do so again. We know that the Lord is faithful. If the exemption is granted and we can convert our visas, WE WILL PRAISE THE LORD THAT WE CAN SAVE THE EXPENSE AND DISRUPTION OF A VISA TRIP TO RENEW THEM. If the exemption is not granted, WE WILL GO TO MADRID AND PRAISE THE LORD FOR HAVING A REASON TO SEE SOMEPLACE WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. Either way the Lord is in control and our response is to pray. We will give you an update Tomorrow or Thursday after the meeting is over. Please share this prayer request with your church prayer lines.

Our adjustment to life in Moscow is going well. We looked at our expenses for the first 30 days here and we have come in within what we budgeted (which is a praise). Lois is learning to cook Russian which saves on our food budget. She is doing quite well at that. We have saved a lot on transportation costs because we don’t have to travel back and forth to school every day. That’s a big praise for us. Lois along with her regular responsibilities at the school has gotten her first English student here at the apartment. She is an 11 year old girl named Yana who lives on the 16th floor of our building. Our concierge downstairs told her mom to contact us. Lois will be meeting with her 1 hour a week and they did their first meeting Friday after school. Also, she has been working with the English club associated with the summer camp we have attended. They meet on Wednesday evenings and they are thrilled to have another native English speaker working with them. Elvira, the leader is going to be out this Wednesday and has asked Lois to teach the lesson! Lois has only been once so far to observe so please keep her in your prayers as well. It makes for a really long day on Wednesday, but Lois is excited about being a part of this ministry. Many people have come to know Christ through this English club that meets throughout the year.

Tom is feeling more at ease with his classes and has been able to do experiments in each of the 3 science classes. The students have really enjoyed them and Tom has really enjoyed doing them. He is really getting a kick out of working with his students. Several missionary parents have already personally expressed their gratitude for our being here. It really ministers to the Missionary and Christian and Business community at Hinkson. It is still taking Tom a good part of the evening to prepare for his classes for the next day so please keep him in your prayers as well.

Thank you again for your prayers and financial support of the ministry God has given us. We could not be here without you.

Blessings,
Tom & Lois

God has been opening the doors for Tom and I to work with C-entral A-aian ministries. Yesterday I went to a ladies luncheon at the home of a C&MA International Worker. There were three ladies from Bekstown and one from Tstown. We shared a nice lunch, enjoyed getting to know each other and worked on a craft together. It was amazing to hear their stories. We take so much for granted as Americans.

I met Zelola, she is from Tstown originally. She is an educated woman. Her major was linguistics, she taught English at a university in a large city in Bekstown. She and her husband fled Bekstown leaving behind good jobs, a home and family when the persecution became so severe and there was a threat of her husband being arrested. They relocated to Kursk (10 hours from Moscow) where they are having to start over. God has been good. She and her husband have found a huge number of fellow immigrants there to minister to. Her husband is presently pastoring a home church and teaching in the Seminary there. They have been working on translating a 14 week, long distance seminary coarse into both of their languages. She came to know the Lord through her brother and gradually all of her family has come to the Lord. She has a cool story.

I also met Tamara, she is the wife of the national pastor that our friends work with here in Moscow. She and her husband also fled the persecution in Beckstown when he was placed in jail for a period of time. Her story is heart breaking. She is the only member of her family that knows the Lord. Her father is an alcoholic and beats her mother regularly. She and her twin sister were named, by her father, for his first two mistresses. When her youngest sister was born her father wanted to leave her at the hospital which distressed Tamara very much. Her sister was born both deaf and mute. Tamara witnessed many times, her father while drunk, holding her sister upside down over their balcony and threatening to drop her. She came to know the Lord through a distant cousin who came to visit. She said the first night, when she saw her praying, she thought her cousin was crazy and she went to bed laughing at her. The next day her cousin woke up singing a song with 14 verses about salvation and she found herself crying. Tamara asked her cousin to write the song down for her because it was beautiful and she also wanted to sing this song that would touch peoples hearts. Her cousin asked her if she wanted to go to church with her, Tamara agreed. They asked Tamara’s mother if she could go to her cousin’s mosque (since mosque was the Muslim equivalent to church) her mother was overjoyed for her to go, she had been nagging her daughter to read the Koran and go to Mosque. Tamara swore each time she went that she would not go back but continued going. One evening she heard a man preach about Jesus and it made her cry. She told God “If you are real make my father stop drinking and beating my mom for three days and I will follow you.” He did and she did, and went forward eleven times just to make sure God knew she wanted to follow Jesus. She has seen God do many miracles; she met her husband at this church and she has seen her sister healed of her deafness and muteness. Tamara said laughing, ‘We used to pray for her to talk to us now we pray for her to stop.” She, however, has not seen anyone in her family come to salvation and this brings her much pain. In her culture you follow what the father and mother say but particularly the father, and she knows if he would come to salvation the whole family would come. His name is Oscar and I told her I would share his name with all of my friends and tell them to pray for Oscar’s salvation. This made her happy.

I also got to hear Dildora’s story. She is also the only one in her family to know Christ. She came to the Lord though the witness of her friend’s father. He told Dildora, when she was 10, that he would pray for her to know Jesus and gave her a Bible. She read it and God spoke to her heart. She is married to a Christian that she met here in Moscow and they are expecting their first baby in August. Her heart is to know God more.

It is amazing to me to think of these people fleeing their homelands to come to Russia for religious freedom, it almost seems more than a little ironic, particularly when they have to face so much persecution here. According to Tamara the persecution has intensified in Bekstown over the past few months. It used to be that the men took the brunt of the persecution which consisted of frequent arrest and jail time. Now the government has decided that this method of persecution was too costly and seized the opportunity to make some money by charging huge fines costing these people everything they own, often totaling more than could be paid back in a life time. The other thing that has changed is the behavior of law enforcement officers has deteriorated to sexual harassment of leader’s families, their women and children, to include rape. Last spring there was a conference held to help teach people how to more effectively develop and implement cell church models among C Aers There were many leaders that came from Bekstown and Tstown to help lead in that training. Upon returning home the government was ready for them, they knew why they came to Russia and they are now facing this new form of persecution. Tamara said they will only go after the leaders. These men have risked everything for the sake of the gospel.

So how can we pray:

1. Remember the name Oscar. Pray that Oscar, Tamara’s father, will come to the saving knowledge of Christ

2. Pray for the leaders in Bekstown and Tstown and their families. Pray for their strength in the face of adversity and for the safety of their families.

3. Pray for Zelola. She will be returning to her home country for treatment of a kidney stone. Pray for safe travels and that the procedure goes well.

4. Pray for some up and coming events:

a. In Sept. there will be a group from the states bring clothes for a give away to the C A community. These are the Sanrem (the street cleaners), the fruit and vegetable stand and sharuma stand workers; they work long hours for not much pay. They live in dorms where several people, sometime several families share a room. Last year during this event there were over 60 that attended. They have the opportunity to hear the gospel. They have a nice meal and the women get together to fellowship and do a craft.

b. We also have monthly women’s luncheons, like yesterday. Pray for these; it is an opportunity for these women to bring their unsaved friends.

c. They also have a home group that meets and there are also seekers who come.

Thank you for your prayers. The interview for the repatriation committee went well. I had no trouble getting there. I met with a woman from Africa who was duped into coming to Moscow by an organization that promised to take her to France. Her family gave them a lot of money so she could go. When she arrived in Moscow they took her passport, visa and other papers under the guise they would be getting the documents for her trip to France. Someone was supposed to meet with her in a few days; they never showed and they kept her documents. She has been here two years without papers. She lives with “friends” moving from one place to another but is lucky not to be living on the street. She has not been able to get suitable work because she does not have papers. She works odd jobs, under the table, such as handing out fliers at the metro. Sometimes she receives pay for this, most times not. I will be giving her info, for review, to the rest of the committee and we will decide if we can help her get home. Her situation is better than most.

The Repatriation Committee is a ministry through MPC (Moscow Protestant Chaplaincy). The committee regrouped in January. It was disbanded a year ago when they stopped receiving financial help through the American Embassy. Prior to the regrouping they were dealing with mostly Africans seeking political asylum in the U.S. This time the group came back together to help Africans return to their home countries because of the growing need in the African community here. They were looking for women to serve on the committee and that is when I joined. Many of the women are victims of human trafficking, placed into the sex slave industry (my client was lucky) and the men are mostly brought here under the guise that they are being scouted for a Russian football (soccer) league where they can make lots of money. Their families, sometimes their entire village, help raise huge sums of money to get them here so they can be famous and send money home. They, like my client, discover the hoax once they arrive and loose all their money and their papers. Some are arrested and face fines and prison, they sleep on the street and when they do work for construction jobs or passing out flyers many times the pay is withheld. Moscow is a very harsh environment, there is a lot of prejudice and persecution. They have no rights and the skin heads here have no conscience about beating or killing.

Since January the committee has sent 9 people home to Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Senegal and Cameroon. The committee is working to connect these people to outreach ministries, once home, to help them get readjusted. The MPC also runs a program here known as the Parrish Center. I went there today to do the interview. It is a unique place set up for fellowship and worship; it has a large room with 4 computers connected to the internet so they can contact people at home, bookshelves filled with books they can check out to read or study, 2 comfortable couches, chairs and a TV to enjoy. There are 2 rooms off to one side designated as a free clinic. The first room is for consultation and the second is both an examination room and a used clothing center. There is also a bath with a shower. The Parrish Center is a safe place and they will help provide temporary housing for those who are homeless.

Please keep this ministry in your prayers. Pray for wisdom as we have to make decisions that will affect people’s lives. Pray for the Africans here and their situations. Pray for the Parrish Center and Daniel who runs it, as they reach out to show the love of Christ.

Today we went to an eight hour training session for English Camp. It was good to see everyone. The textbook, for English camp, is a look at the life of Abraham. It looks like it will be a powerful teaching and evangelism tool. Not only is it very professional in its approach to teaching English (since students pay to come and increase their English skills) but it has the students look deeply into God’s ideal for success as shown through the life of Abraham. The camp’s motto, “Access to your Success”, is appealing to Russians as so many are caught up with a more capitalistic view of success. They are expecting a full house. Please keep this camp in your prayers. While it openly acknowledges, in all its promotions, that it is a Christian camp there are many non-Christians that attend because it is both less expensive than other camps and it provides real native English speakers. In the past we have had; Muslim, Buddhist, atheist, and everything in between. Over the past three years there have been more than 130 professions of faith.
Also be in prayer for the financial provision for us to go. We have had the opportunity to work at this camp two other times; this will be the first time while living in Moscow. It is an excellent opportunity to build relationship and be a part of the follow up and discipleship that takes place after camp.

PRAYER REQUEST FROM THE CAMP

Dear brothers and sisters, let’s unite in our prayer for the upcoming SUPERCAMP. I suggest as in previous years to fast once a week and pray about the camp. Since there are so many of us and it will be difficult to choose one day suitable for all, please decide yourself on which you want to fast. Our strength is only in God.

I remind you about the direction for our prayer:

the whole team (directors, leaders, leaders’ assistants, technical team, English native speakers);
the work in the hearts of future campers, please pray specifically for those that will come from the English Clubs of different churches;
coming of children from Donskoy orphanage (12 years and older) and fund-raising for them (it’s planned to take 9 children + 1 teacher);

This has been a wild ride almost from it’s inception. What started as a nudge 12 years ago; now a reality. Many have asked “Why Russia?” To this I shrug and answer “I just don’t know, it’s truly been a God thing”. I think we were looking at an Alliance Life magazine. The article talked about the doors to Russia that were just beginning to open and we longed to be a part of that. Maybe for me it started in my childhood. I have always felt drawn to Russia. I can’t explain it. What I do know it has been an eleven year journey and God is faithful. He is always faithful.
